I wanted to share with you some not so technical tips I use on my shoots to make it more enjoyable but also to get great shots.
It's important to remember that shoots are suppose to be fun, even if you're doing the most vital shoot of your career, you are meant to be enjoying it otherwise you don't have a passion for it.
1) You don't need fancy expensive equipment to get a good shot - all it takes is an idea. You can have a really good concept and shoot on your iphone until you invest in a bigger camera. You don't need to dive straight in and buy the fanciest equipment.
2) Learn / research poses for the models, most of the time your model wont be a professional model it'll be your friend or family member so to put your model at ease look into poses and become a director (but be kind) so they feel more comfortable.
3) Taking the time to do a couple of test shots before you go out on location / get into the shoot will be super beneficial for both you and the model. It gives you a sense of the models angles and they begin to feel more confident in front of the camera, it's less overwhelming than throwing them straight into a location.
3) Natural lightening will always be the best. In my opinion I choose the sun over a studio light every single time. You can do some really cool things with natural light and shadows, just experiment and see what happens.
4) Any location is a location, find a spot that you like and find a way to make it work. find a spot with something interesting or just plain behind it and stick your model in front of it. For this shot I simply got Amy to sit next to a bush and made it work.
5) Don't be embarrassed to lie on the floor, climb a tree etc, do anything to get the perfect shot.
6) I like to experiment with poses and angles - never just take one shot then ask the model to change position take multiple shots of the same position at multiple angels with slight changes where necessary e.g. tilt of the head. It can make all the difference.
These are just a few of the things that I do and think about when I'm on a shoot.
Remember: have fun!
